Symposium Highlights Mutual Benefits
The BioTechnology Institute (BTI) and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) have held collaborative
symposia since the year 2000, and a formal exchange program established prior to that has enhanced communications
between researchers at the two institutions. These international connections provide an opportunity for technological as
well as cultural learning experiences.
The symposium hosted by the BioTechnology Institute on October 10th was an opportunity for researchers at the two
institutions to connect and compare notes. NAIST is well known for research into plant genomics, dynamic molecular
modeling, and the exhaustive analysis and documentation of enzyme reactions, metabolic pathways and other molecular
mechanisms. Researchers at the BioTechnology Institute have taken the lead in exploring applications for microbial
physiology and biocatalysis in areas such as biofuels and the production of products made from renewable resources.
Members of both institutions felt that the exchange of information at the symposium was mutually beneficial.
