Downstream processing

The Biotechnology Resource center offers capabilities for the recovery and purification of cells, proteins, as well as primary and secondary metabolites from the bench-scale to the pilot-scale. Services include:
- Recovery and purification of proteins and small molecules
- Cell disruption
- Inclusion body preparations
- Product harvest and concentration by micro- and ultrafiltration
- Protein refolding
- Freeze drying

Protein expression

Our work in protein expression integrates most of the services described above. Our primary expression hosts are E. coli, Pichia pastoris, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A complete protein expression project would comprise the following steps:
- Cloning target gene into chosen expression vector
- Creation of fusion proteins, if desired
- Initial protein expression analysis on a small scale
- Expression optimization specific to host organism
- Scale-up of fermentation or cell culture to desired process size
- Development and optimization of protein recovery and purification strategy
- Scale-up of recovery and purification process
