Mining Transcriptional Data

Arkady Khodursky, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics with the BioTechnology Institute, studies signal processing in relation to gene position on the chromosome. Through the use of microarray analysis of E. coli bacteria, Khodursky tries to understand how gene regulation occurs in the context of the chromosome.

Khodursky has teamed with Jim Cotner (EEB) to utilize microarray technology to understand the metabolic process controls in hydrogen-producing Cyanobacteria. The primary hypothesis is that the nature of limiting factors vis-a-vis key ingredients such as CO2, nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur has a distinct effect on yield and energy pathways. The regulatory information obtained on this species of Cyanobacteria should be applicable to other autotrophic organisms. Systemic understanding of the interactions between hydrogen metabolism, respiration, photosynthesis and bacterial nutrtional status is essential to optimizing hydrogen production.
