Cultivating Biological Diversity
Michael Travisano recently joined the BioTechnology Institute as an Associate Professor
in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior. Travisano was an
associate professor of biology and biochemistry at the University of Houston
where his research focused on understanding the causes of biological diversity
and complexity. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1993.
Travisano has described his work studying the speciation of yeast as
useful in developing new microbial solutions. He has looked at the basis for
reproductive isolation in six closely-associated strains of yeast and suggested
that industrial strains that were sterile could be made viable and productive
through homoploid hybrid speciation.
