About ISBP

The International Symposia onBacterial Polyhydroxyalkanoates,
or Biological Polyesters,
or Biodegradable Polyesters
or in short ISBP,

started 18 years ago in Toronto, Canada, and have been well established on a biennial basis since then. So far, ISBP conferences have been held in Sitges, Spain (1990), Gottingen, Germany (1992), Montreal, Canada (1994), Davos, Switzerland (1996), Saitama, Japan (1998), Cambridge, USA (2000), Munster, Germany (2002), and Beijing, China (2004).

This year ISBP2006 will take place at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis/St. Paul (USA). It will provide again a forum for cross disciplinary interactions between biologists, biotechnologists, chemists, polymer scientists, chemical engineers from academia and industry to discuss biological polyesters that now increasingly find applications in diverse areas as biodegradable, biocompatible plastics that can be made from renewable resources. The topics will include:

  • Polyhydroxyalkanoic acids (PHA)
  • Poly lactic acids (PLA) and other biological polyesters
  • Biology and metabolic engineering of biopolymers
  • Enzymes for polymer synthesis and modifications
  • Characterization of biopolymers
  • Design of polymer properties
  • Nano-structured polymers
  • Biodegradation of polymers
  • Biopolymer blends
  • Applications of biopolymers
  • Large scale biopolymer production and economics
  • Life-cycle analysis

I hope to be able to welcome many of you in Minnesota for an exciting event!
