Michael C. Flickinger, Ph.D.
Ph.D: Pharmaceutical Biochemistry (University of Wisconsin, 1977)
Post Doctoral: School of Chemical Engineering, Purdue University.
Program Director: National Cancer Institute, Frederick, M.D.
Professor, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics (BMBB) / BioTechnology Institute

Editor-in-Chief, Encyclopedia of Bioprocess Technology: Fermentation, Biocatalysis and Bioseparation, Wiley-Interscience.

Prof. Michael C. Flickinger was hired in 1985 from the National Cancer Institute to become the founding director of the BPTI (now known as BTI). Prior to coming to Minnesota he was Director of the Fermentation Program at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. At NCI he directed drug discovery, process development, scale-up, and cGMP manufacturing groups supplying experimental anti-tumor drugs and biologics for pre-clinical and clinical trials. Professor Flickinger's entire career has been at the interface between microbiology and biochemical engineering. He teaches and advises graduate and post doctoral students in biochemistry, microbiology or chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota. He is well known for his cross-disciplinary research, his teaching, and as a consultant to industry in the areas of fermentation process development, manufacturing, containment, and facilities design. As the 1993 recipient of the David Perlman Memorial Lecturer award, Dr. Flickinger has been recognized for his "long-standing accomplishments in the field of biochemical technology" which include contributions in the areas of fermentation technology, hybridoma cell growth and metabolism, and microbial biochemistry. He is the recipient of the 1995 American Chemical Society's Van Lanen Distinguished Service Award. He is active in organizing industrial short courses and training industrial scientists in addition to his teaching and training of graduate students at the University of Minnesota.
